Bullseye, Man. Wish I had written this; it hits the very heart of my beliefs. Biological systems are intrinsically self-regulated to make unlimited growth anathema. Hence, one might be led to conclude that we have become estranged and no longer belong to that complex systemic genre. To our ultimate self-harm, I fear.

Morality is subjective. Humans have never valued other human life. Humans have always killed other humans. With that premise, it is not wrong, or immoral, to kill other humans.

Many Humans have no humanity. In the case of Gaza, 200 plus countries have no humanity.

This is not new. There is a wiki page that lists the genocides. No one came to the aid of the people in Africa during colonialism. Or the indigenous people of the world. The Cambodians. No one helped the Rwandans. The people of Guatemala . Armenia. Darfur. China during the cultural revolution. Who is helping the people crossing the Mediterranean? The people of India or Ireland during the famines caused by the UK. No one came to the aid of African Americans in the USA, in Tulsa, in Cincinnati, in Mississippi, in Alabama….

Why would anyone expect anything different in 2025?

Has there ever been a time when other nations stopped a genocide? Maybe we can count Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Humans don’t have humanity. Working in pubic health during the holocaust, no country came to the aid of India, when millions died from the delta variant. No country sent oxygen to help. Not even wood to burn the bodied. No one came to the aid of the USA. The 1,300,000 plus, Americans who have died from Covid. No country sent hospital ships. Health care workers.

Human life doesn’t have value. Our history shows that - It is not wrong to kill, or to allow, other humans to be systematically murdered.

Indignation serves no purpose. Human beings have no humanity.

Abandon hope, all ye who enter this veil of tears? Can't quite go there. The system of capitalism has developed a monstrous and ruthless elite. I see real humans objecting to their reign. We need to develop a determined and intelligent resistance.

You are right Theresa, and echo my point of view. One only has to look at the history of human civilization for 5000 years to see that human self-interest “trumps” human compassion every single time. Whether it is our fellow human beings, animal life, or literally the earth we stand on…as a group, humans always fail to halt our own destruction. How did our species evolve so contrary to the nature of other life forms on this planet? Just like we cannot step out of our own consciousness to study ourselves objectively, I suppose this question will remain unanswered. This is not to say we should do nothing, but temper our hope with acceptance that those with compassion, will always be a minority among the tide that sweeps us towards our ultimate demise.

Perhaps that's a history that is itself shaped by evil forces, to render legible only the deeds (that is the blood shed) of evil men of power. Throughout much of that time people have generally got on with each other okay. But that’s not very “historic”.

Honestly, these days, I wonder if most people really are even worth saving—at least, in countries like the US, where I live.

"...I cannot stand to look at the faux moral posturing over Ukraine by the west. The truth? The money is in keeping that war going, funding Ukraine, rearming Europe. Latest estimates are that the war has caused 1.4 million casualties. These are absolutely horrifying numbers. Wanting more dead young men isn’t moral. Supporting Ukraine has nothing to do with good or bad, right or wrong. It’s only about blood money, resources and strategic interests.

"And this moral cesspit of a civilisation is one in which we all swim, whether we like it or not."

you nail it every time, nate. thank you for your writing!

Nate, you speak the truth. Nobody cares. Why? Because morality is subjective. Humans have no humanity. And they are fundamentally selfish. It’s who we are as a species. I have no faith left in humanity.

Yuo are quite right to criticise the world powers for encouraging the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians but fortunately, the support from ordinary people has never been this massive nor this sustained. It doesn't get covered well in the mainstream media, but this level of realisation about the true nature of Israel is unprecedented.

Remember the enormous marches in support of the Palestinians. The university occupations and other solidarity actions. There is some good in the world.

People will rise up!

This is just what civilization does. It sucks, but if we insist on perpetuating civilization, this is where it ends up. Over and over and over again.
