This is extremely spot-on. As someone who is the Lone Masker in my family/neighborhood it is incredibly depressing to see how it’s the vibes people care about, not reality. The more we prioritize our psychological comfort over dealing with the challenges facing us the worse things are going to get.
Well. Of course. It’s not a slip slide to the right- it is what America has always been. Ask any Native American, or any Black person who is the descendant of someone kidnapped and enslaved. Kamala is not the descendant of an enslaved human in the USA, nor was Obama.
America was founded on the genocide of Native Americans. America was designed to ensure the perpetual kidnapping and enslavement of Black people. It was also designed to ensure that the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor.
Americans only care about the genocide in Gaza cause the Palestinians are white. Sorry not sorry- but it’s true.
This is America. It is not a slide, it is what this country was founded to be.
Tobias Rasberry, my great great to the x power wasn’t considered a human being. The first time he was considered a human in the census was 1866, when he was 26 yrs old.
What’s interesting, I didn’t realize that we have nothing from the 19th century, even though we had been in the USA for an unknown period of time. Nothing. Not even a spoon. 🥄 Hard to believe- that my ancestors who worked and worked and worked- were restricted so much by this country that they couldn’t pass down a spoon, a tea cup, a ring. 💍 But America was designed to keep the poor - poor. And it does a great job.
And Walz- blinding and murdering reporters. He didn’t act until both cities were being burnt by terrorists from outside the cities. My friends had to patrol their own neighborhoods. Then Walz blamed the idiot Frey for not filling out the proper form..Walz was also mediocre, at best, with the Covid response. He was more concerned about his reelection than the people of MN. During the winter of 2022, doctors and healthcare organizations wrote full page ads begging the government to do something. He didn’t say anything, nor did he do anything. Minnesota like so many other states, put refrigerated trucks behind hospitals.
I am not a “fan” of Walz. He is another mediocre white man. 4.4 million views?! His tweets in the past would get 400 views, at most. During his time as governor - his team never responded to calls, or emails, or tweets.
Kamala Harris is the daughter of two accomplished intellectuals. Her father, Donald J. Harris, after immigtating from Jamaica, was a Stanford University economist. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, after immigrating from Madras, (now Chennai, Tamil Nadu), India, and after studying at the University of California, Berkeley, was a biomedical scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
With regard to race, Kamala Harris doesn't have any ancestors in the USA, but is a patchwork of races as many U.S. citizens are.
She is half (Asian) Indian by her mother whose parents both came from the highest and most privileged caste in the Indian caste system (Brahman). So, as always in India at the time (very often now as well), her parent's marriage was arranged, as were all her ancestors of the Indian branch, and in the same caste, of course. Shyamala married in the U.S. Donald J. Harris, a scholar from Jamaica, which marked an exceptional independence of mind given her cultural background.
Her father's racial background is mixed. Donald's father, Oscar Joseph Harris (Kamala's paternal grandfather) was white with some black ancestry too by his mother (Christina Elita Brown) who was mixed race already; the ascendants of Christina's mother are not known, probably african slaves. Christina's father (Kamala's great great grandfather) was Hamilton Brown from Ireland, sugar cane plantation and slave owner, founder of Brown's Town, Jamaica, where Kamala's father was born. The ascendants of the father of Oscar Joseph Harris (Harris, Brown, Taylor, Watson) all came from Ireland and Scotland, men and women.
Donald's mother (Donald; Kamala's paternal grandfather), Beryl Madeline Finegan was black. Her ancestry doesn't go beyond her own parents. She probably is a descendant of african slaves in Jamaica. The original inhabitants, the Tainos, had all been massacred by the Spaniards long before the Island was taken by the British in 1655, who, later, imported slaves from Africa for their sugar plantations. Slavery was abolished in 1838 in Jamaica.
This is more the rule than the exception in Jamaica; most people are actually mixed race.
The forces of climate change, ever worse weather catastrophes, will determine the future. I just wrote about Storm Debby, a mere Category 1 storm that caused $12.3bn in damage, mostly uninsured. Even with Harris-Walz doing the right things, we're not even in a defensive position, we're in a reactive one. Hard truths need to be communicated, they won't be.
We are heading for degrowth one way or another, and pretending that's not going to happen is either deluded or cowardly. Oil has tipped major geologic features that determine the weather. Extinction rates are at a level never seen before. Oil, on which we are dependent to build so-called renewables, will be economically unviable to harvest within 50 years, possibly much sooner. And of course the more we burn, the more we lock in future weather disasters.
We are headed for food shortages and world-wide economic collapse on this path. Leadership that at least acknowledged reality could soften the blow a bit, but that's about it. I watched about ten minutes of the convention last night, all I could stomach. It's just a show.
On the first “earth” day in the 1970’s, a few people knew we needed to act differently, as kids played with giant earth ball while plane after plane flew and out of the airport right next to the school. (SFO) We didn’t act.
Hurricane Katrina- came and went. We did not act.
California burning and burning and burning some more. Burning people alive. We did not act.
Maui Hawaii. An island for goodness sakes! People burned alive with their dogs in their cars and their apartments. We have done nothing.
The floods in Pakistan. The heat in India, Arizona, Colorado, Greece, Sudan, Death Valley. People dying from heat on their motorcycles.
No one does anything and no one cares who lives or dies. No one cares that a 14 year old burns alive in his family’s apartment. No one cares that children died running from the flames in Northern California.
Pick a “catastrophe.” Earthquakes in Syria and Turkey- causing buildings to collapse due to shoddy construction- so the builders could make more $$. Starvation in Yemen and Sudan. Children shot in their classroom while the police outside do nothing. Why? The kids are Hispanic kids.
A nazi driving to a Black grocery store to kill Black people living their lives. The same city has an ice freeze that kills people driving home from work, walking to the store to get milk…
No one acts. No one cares. “The world” is indifferent to our suffering.
I think about this a lot. My sister thought that the world hated her, so she hated it back. All that hate led to substance abuse. She enmeshed her only child and they committed armed robberies together to buy drugs- both of them angry at the world. Last April, my sister living in a motel in San Francisco, was high and climbed through a window. The window should have been locked. My sister fell 5 floors down a shaft to her death. Not one attorney or news organization was interested in her story. The world is, and was indifferent to her suffering. Hating the world is pointless. Human beings are narcissists, we always have been. We only care about ourselves.
It is interesting to look at all of the abandoned towns around the world. Japan is particularly interesting. The houses were built for 1-2 generations. Plant life takes over so quickly. The last person alive in Japan will have to turn the lights off. Korea too. Depopulation is happening now.
My son always wanted to be a dad- but he can’t meet anyone. Most of his friends won’t have children cause it’s not fair to the kids. I don’t understand people having children, today. Their children will suffer.
Our end is coming. I hope to be dead by the worst of it. I don’t want to survive the zombieless apocalypse.
Your son can’t meet anyone because women have opted out of dating them because they’ve grown to be quite awful. Not your son specifically, I don’t know him, but I can tell you that none of my friends are dating men right now because they are trying to take our rights in the US.
WE WILL NOT BIRTH OUR OWN OPPRESSORS. Period
If your son wants to find someone he needs to get together with his friends and convince them to act right so women will want to date them. Otherwise there’s no hope for for him
My spouse, who was a republican before he met me…is loving the convention and the speeches. He is also loving that our governor is the VP
Pick.
Meanwhile- Minnesota has a huge Covid spike and the fair started today. 2,000,000 crammed together for 12 days. School starts right after that. Hospitals are full.
I live in New Hampshire and our news told us last week that someone with TB had been in a daycare in Manchester from March until August. But don’t worry they’ve alerted the people who were in the daycare with this person. And of course that helps in August when people were exposed in March right? That’s fine who cares these are just poor kids in a daycare anyway. Then they wonder why women aren’t risking their health and lives to produce babies for the machine.
Thank you for so adeptly articulating my thoughts to myself. I've been watching the love fest with feelings of unease and not taking the time to figure out exactly what they are (after all, the only important thing is anyone but Trump, right?). Now I know why I'm so unhappy watching all that smugness in Chicago.
Departments of Energy and Defense take almost a trillion dollars ($1,000,000,000,000) yearly in the federal budget. This money is funneled into large corporations whose wealthy executives and shareholders lobby Congress for continued spending. This coterie includes members of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee who are not held to the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
The above reality is a form of fascism. Corporations and wealthy elite run our institutions and therefore are our rulers. This is why there are no consequences for badly designed, poorly performing hardware produced with perpetual cost overruns.
For myself, I cannot even express my displeasure by voting for a non fascist sane third party alternative. My state has withheld ballot line access for third parties other than two small far far right parties.
The contempt of the billionaires for our welfare was clearly demonstrated by engineering the ascension of Ms. Harris to the Democratic Presidential nomination. She was the darling of the Hamptons in 2020 where votes are cast by donations not ballots.
Nate Bear's column title must be in jest, but its proscription is true: do not panic, organize and overthrow these bums!
Nah. Capitalism is a tool of the fascists. Think about who both capitalism and fascism hurts and benefits the most. They both predominantly harm: POC. Women. LGBTQ people. Disabled people. Children. Poor white people. And they both predominantly benefit wealthy, white men. They're one and the same.

I'll agree there that corporate capitalism and also disaster capitalism facilitates fascism, probably in a new way we haven't seen before. I think that's why we're in the danger zone right now. And I agree the Democratic Party is just facilitating the advancement the fascism by still embracing a lot of these policies. The Republicans on the other hand are embracing full on authoritarian fascism and not even bothering to cloak it in more digestible capitalism

And didn’t Brianna Taylor get murdered that year too? Maybe she was the year before but either way that was part of why the George Floyd protests were so big, it wasn’t specifically just him, it was all the murdering that came before him that year and people have had enough.
And I wouldn’t say the protests did nothing, they arrested the man who shot Sandra, that pig is charged with murder as he should be. They wouldn’t have charged him in 2019, but they did in 2024 because they don’t want another uprising like they had in 2020.
It wasn’t for nothing. It’s just that justice is slow AF
I’m voting for Claudia and Karina and well I don’t think they have a chance of winning New Hampshire where I live, I have to vote for the world I want. I know as I was talking about 20 years I realized I was being ridiculous. I shop at Aldi and I usually buy raw almonds because I love them. The last two bags I have purchased are full of very flat or deformed almonds. They still taste good, But they’re not getting what they need to grow right.
The squirrels broke my little metal birdbath I had been refilling every day, the birds don’t use it but every time I went to put water in it I saw bees drinking from it so I was freshening it up every day all summer mostly for the bees.
The temperature has finally gone down, but I’ll probably keep giving them water somehow for a little while I worry about those little buggers
Cool. I didn't know Aldi has almonds. Lol. Come to think of it, I've never thought to look. Lol. I will definitely check the next time I shop there. Awww💕 That's so beautiful🤗
America has been on this slope for a long time and for a number of reasons, and now, 77 days before election day (far less considering early voting in most states), yes, we are trapped again. Too late. What can we do to prevent a fascist leader from destroying the remnants of this democracy with a christo-fascist ideology turned into law, erasing our freedoms? But vote for Democrats? I can live in the U.S.A. with all its flaws, the injustice, and the real power of the super-rich* no matter what party is in place, but not in the dystopian country we'll have if Republicans win come November. Or if they engage in a coup d'etat successfully this time.
Note: I wish so much I were wrong, but I could see it coming: the United States become a religious/fascist country, compounding the consequences of global warming and extreme inequality—they are all linked together. This book, which I (Adam Flint) wrote in 2020, is titled "Mona," accessible on Amazon (there are such self-published novels on Amazon buried under millions of other books with no means to be known; no publisher will ever publish them—the public must be kept in the dark or distracted).

What you're describing is capitalism and oligarchy. I think people are using the word fascism incorrectly lately
you're right, it's been bothering me and I've been doing it as a kind of catch-all....will work on it
Definitely parts of it is fascism but I would love to see a more nuanced parsing between the ills of disaster/late stage Capitalism and Fascism.
yeah
Plutocracy
America has always been the great plutocracy
Built on the graves of the Native Americans
Built on the backs of Black people, kidnapped and enslaved
