Trump does not have to face another election. Break enough stuff and it may preclude holding another election when his term supposedly concludes.

Trump can play us as victims of unfair trade and he is right, we are. Trump just does not label correctly the perpetrators of this unfairness: the corporate class that engaged in global labor arbitrage.

What we in the wealthy west have never come to terms with is how our lifestyles depend upon stripping the global south of resources and replacing those with our refuse. That will end.

Trump's trade war will not find a victory. But maybe the impoverishment of the US can lead to a more sustainable environment. That is certainly not Trump's goal, but that could well be the result.

The trade war is a distraction from the larger point. This is less about economics and more about his starving us into accepting his terms. He is intentionally tanking our economy. When we're good and screwed he'll then tell us only he can fix it and offer us a Four Year Plan. It won't work, but we'll all be so broke that we'll accept his "solutions" as a matter of survival. We'll overlook a lot of bad things out of self-preservation, and even more to protect our kids. This is basic 1930s Germany playbook stuff. Trump may not know what he's doing but the puppeteers pulling his strings do. Watch for increasing tax benefits or stimulus checks to people who are newly married and starting families. It'll happen when people really start hurting.

It’s also to keep us focused on what Trump is doing so the state Republicans can pass all kinds of ridiculous things

I can’t pay attention to Trump’s nonsense, I can’t do anything about that, but what I can do is go on my state government calendar and look at the introduced house bills that are going to committee so that I can make public comment in support of or against.

It actually helps. It’s easier to stop the abusive laws before they are made than it is to fight them once they are here.

They just recently tried to do a 15 week abortion ban here, there were 10,000 public comments against it and only 800 in support so they just withdrew it I think. Some of those people showed up in person to the committee, some of them simply went online to the state website and clicked oppose. And I love every single one of those 10,000 people

Yes! Yes! So much this! It's important for us to realize that we have state governments to pay attention to. Germany was a whole ass country. We are a country of states and that can make a difference in the outcome.

Yes, this week they’re trying to mess with special ed funding, trying to allow doctors a conscience objection for denying people birth control and sterilization procedures. They’re trying to ban wind farms & dismantle the ones we already have. Absentee ballots too, they’re trying to limit them AND allow members of the public to examine the absentee voter list. So now the public has a right to know who is disabled or traveling on voting day? Ick.

But the Dems are trying to increase state minimum wage (we are still at $7.25), increase maximum unemployment amounts & fund affordable housing. It’s ABSOLUTELY worth supporting those even if people don’t have the bandwidth to oppose the bad stuff.

NH BTW. Repubs have a trifecta even though the general election has been going to the dems for a long time.

Good lord, all levels of Republicans are moving fast and we're just not keeping up!

Thank you. This is the best & most concise thing I've read about the current trade wars.

Thanks! That was the goal

Thank you for this, Nate! Damn! This is the most sensible analysis of the tariff situation I've read to date. Why isn't our mainstream media making it?! (Of course, I know: it's because it sucks.)

One option you didn't mention seems to be the one Trump has chosen (at least temporarily). Trump is "pausing" the tariffs on Canada and Mexico. I'd love to hear your take on that.

Please keep up the good work!

Thanks Brynn. I expect the pause trends us towards the not much happens options. Although I could see him doing 10% instead like he has on China. Also still the EU come

Thanks! I guess we'll see, eh? Take care.

You know what else we get from China besides fentanyl? Pure naltrexone powder for LDN. LDN is the only treatment I have found in decades that has helped me with MECFS. It’s also sometimes helpful for people with long Covid. I paid $68 for 90 capsules the other day which is the normal price. I’m a little afraid of what I’m going to have to pay in 90 days when I refill. I can’t go without this medication and have any kind of normal life. If I go back to only having one to two usable hours a day, well, I’m not going to speculate about that. I suppose I should stop telling people about the wonderful compounding pharmacy that I use that can get their LDN covered by their insurance, because I really don’t want people buying it all up. (But I am not selfish so Johnson’s Compounding in Waltham Mass got LDN covered by insurance using the 50 mg tablets-I paid $4.15 for 90 0.5 mg capsules.)
