Lincoln & more relevantly, the most effective anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist of all time, FDR, were outliers in the positive direction - the USA really was a benevolent defender of freedom and democratic values yada, yada, yada in the FDR era,1933-1945, and everyone on the planet saw it.

Even if I could suddenly prompt my wild imagination to envision living in a legitimately functioning democracy that's no longer "imperial" (in a global economy) nor supportive of anti-democratic states, Mr. Bear has left me the odd notion that even "sanctions" (aka "boycotts" or "blockades") are the wrong tool to redress political grievances.
If not sanctions, what then are democratic nations expected to do with totalitarian states and the strongmen who subjugate them?
