In the last few days there has been a palpable shift in the tone of the messages from Palestinians in Gaza.
Desperate post after desperate post from starving people begging for help attests to a change in conditions, a new and final phase of the holocaust. Hunger has now begun to wreak its awful havoc on bodies and minds. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians may well be living their final days, their final weeks. If the siege of Gaza isn’t broken, if massive amounts of food don’t start entering an enclave turned almost fully to rubble, this will be it. This will be the end.
The Israeli holocaust of Gaza, backed by the western powers, with the support of the majority of western Jewish organisations, will be complete. The Jewish state will have achieved its long-standing goal of emptying Gaza of Palestinians. The only thing left will be to dig the mass graves before the asphalt is laid and the condo planning begins.
I am emphasising the religion because we are at the final stage of a genocide committed by the Jewish state. And we can no longer ignore what we’ve seen, or haven’t seen, from mainstream Jewish groups in the west. We can no longer give a pass to the Jewish organisations attached and aligned to western liberal and conservative parties, all of whom, without exception, have run cover for genocide. We can no longer ignore the role played by so-called ‘Jewish community leaders,’ chief rabbis and ‘antisemitism tzars’ who, in the midst of a final solution in Gaza, are still focused on Jewish feelings.
It is grotesque. The Jewish state is in the orgiastic throes of genocidal impunity and still we are commanded to see Jews as the victims. The historical memory of the Nazi holocaust, one of the greatest evils ever committed, has been desecrated and cynically abused by Israel, by Zionism, and by its supporters in the west. The historian Enzo Traverso says that in the west the Holocaust has become a civic religion, a ‘secular liturgy of remembering.’ And the perpetual victimhood this remembering generates has created the cultural conditions for both genocide and authoritarianism. The weaponisation of Jewish suffering in the first half of the 20th century means that in the first half of the 21st, waving the Palestine flag is now a terror offence in Britain. It means that Palestinian-Americans are disappeared and American college students assaulted to protect Jews. It means raising money for Gaza through bake sales is antisemitic. It means German police now arrest Muslims uploading traditional Islamic music on social media in case it upsets Jews.
We can no longer tip-toe around the fact that the Star of David is at the centre of this holocaust. We can no longer pretend that we’re seeing a fringe band of extremists at work. A genocide can never occur under those conditions. The project of genocide is so awful in its completeness, so final in its implications, that it must be upheld by a rigorous political, social and ideological scaffolding.
And Judaism is a key part of the scaffolding.
Every Palestinian murdered in Gaza was murdered by someone who identified proudly as Jewish. Every Palestinian killed in Gaza was murdered by someone who used their Judaism to excuse the industrialised mass slaughter of another people. And it was all encouraged by western Jewish leaders and organisations.
Since the start of this genocide, we’ve heard Zionism isn’t Judaism. I’ve written this eagerly myself on a number of occasions. Even argued the point. Wanted it to be true. But as a holocaust concludes, I see it now as merely another way to protect and centre Jewish people. As a slogan ‘Zionism isn’t Judaism’ acts as a cordon sanitaire enabling Jewish people to create the distance they need to ensure their relationship with Judaism isn’t complicated by the existence of Israel. But it complicates it patently. It always has done. But it especially complicates it at the moment of an Israeli holocaust.
Zionism didn’t use to be Judaism. Obviously. But it is now. The silence of mainstream Jewish groups shows us that Israel has fully co-opted Judaism and directed it towards genocidal ends and geopolitical goals. Where is the Conference of Jewish Leaders and Rabbis To End Genocide? Where’s the full page joint statement from global Jewish leaders, printed in all western news outlets, condemning Israeli genocide? Genocide is of Israel. And Israel is of Judaism.
The truth is, you can have a Jewish state or you can have Judaism. But in the end you can’t have both. Albert Einstein understood this very clearly. Which is why he opposed the creation of Israel. In a 1948 letter to a Jewish paramilitary group who asked him to support the creation of Israel he predicted a ‘catastrophe’ and called Zionists ‘criminals.’ Because he knew keenly where this flavour of colonial ethno-religious supremacy would inevitably end. Because he was Albert Einstein. But he was side-lined by Jewish supremacists.
So today we’re left with the conclusion that Judaism is Zionism and vice versa. After 21 months, Jewish leaders in the west keep loudly proclaiming it so by telling us Israel is the political embodiment of all Jews. For example, in this pronouncement last week from Morris Cohen, head of Ireland’s Jewish community. The Jewish community in Ireland and measures against Israeli genocide should have nothing to do with each other. But the fact that they do is confirmation of the aforementioned point.
What events could demonstrate otherwise? When a majority of mainstream Jewish groups break with Israel. When a majority demand a one-state solution. When a unified Jewish voice comprised of all the rabbis, leaders, and lobby groups aligned with western liberal and conservative parties demand reparations for Palestinians, the de-Zionisation of the land currently called Israel, and trials for all Jews, Israeli and non, implicated in genocide. When they call for the end of Israel itself.
Of course there are brilliant and courageous individual Jews speaking out and acting against genocide. Norman Finkelstein, Zachary Forster, Anthony Lowenstein, Max Blumenthal and others. But they command nor control institutional power anywhere. The only semi-mainstream Jewish group against genocide, Jewish Voice for Peace, is marginalised and ostracised. The devastating conclusion we must now draw is that the Jewish religion has been hijacked and directed towards genocide.
I am tired of hearing about antisemitism. I am tried of the desecration of the Holocaust to make false and hysterical claims intended only to shield Israel and its crimes. Because it is truly absurd to claim, in the sense of a structural hatred and discrimination that prevents Jews from participating fully in society, that antisemitism exists in the west today. Many of the largest financial institutions, media groups, entertainment organisations and technology companies are led by Jewish people. Maybe this makes me sound a certain way. So be it. A holocaust is being committed by the Jewish state. It’s past time for facts. This is simply a fact. From Blackrock, to Google, to Meta, Goldman Sachs and Disney to the New York Times and many more. An internet search will readily confirm this as fact. Antisemitism under these conditions is an absurd charge.
There are of course hate crimes against Jews. As there are against Muslims, black people, brown people, gay people, trans people. In many of these cases, especially in the case of Muslims, the discrimination is clearly structural and woven into white societies. But for Jewish people, this isn’t 1945.
Why is it important to make this point? Because a genocide, the greatest of all crimes, is coming to its conclusion. There can be no sacred cows, no off limit areas of inquiry, during a time like this. And if we want to stop it (or if we can’t now stop it but want to pursue justice for the victims) we have to find all points of pressure that have any chance of breaking the dome of genocidal impunity that surrounds Israel. And quite clearly, the fact that this genocide is being done by Jews operating under the command of the Jewish state and is fully defended by almost all western Jewish groups, is an extremely important locus of pressure. If they could ever be forced to say and do what is needed, they could change the course of history. They could save two million lives.
But I do not hold my breath. They appear to have decided saving Israel is more important than saving Judaism.
The holocaust of Gaza is more morally corrosive to our shared humanity than the Nazi holocaust because the perpetrators don’t hide it, our governments openly support it, we have daily videos of the most horrific violence imaginable, and still it continues. Auschwitz was done in secret. Gaza is done in public. Gleefully.
This will scar us all for generations.
All I have ever tried to do with this newsletter is write the truth of the world as I see it, even if it has alienated me from some of my readers. And in the past it has. Some have emailed me to unsubscribe and tell me so.
I imagine this article will do the same.
But this is the truth as I see it.
And that’s all I can ever write.
Bravo. This took Guts. Unsubscribe? Hell. I'm going to share this widely. I'd include Katie Halper on your list of individual Jews who tries desperately to bring on rabbis to hammer home the point that Zionism is antithetical to the basic peaceful and help-the-downtrodden tenets of Judaism. But so what: as you say, the Jewish orgs with any power to put a halt to this only seem to puke forth the antisemitism trope. To hell with their sorry arses.
I stand with you 100%. That took immense moral courage on your part.
