I have spent my life staring at and facing what’s really happening in the world from inner circle to outer circle (family, community, government etc.). It has served me well. The reality behind this article Nate, is heartbreaking and I don’t have confidence that many people will stare the oligarchy fascism capitalist system in the face and act on it. I am a U.S. citizen and already have tried to tell my friends that Democracy is already dead and it does not matter who is in power. I’ve been saying it to close friends for years, after not caring what they thought. These particular current friends cannot look at the fact that their vote means nothing, and they say, “I hate it when people say the Democrats aren’t doing enough”. Oh, they’re doing plenty. It just isn’t what you want to see that they are doing. Let’s wave rainbow flags and contribute to fossil fuel profits and arms sales (big business making people money, it makes me sick). I have to work at maintaining my mental health and try to support others who are being used as slaves for the very rich men/people. I’m about to travel in Europe for the first and maybe only time, and I want to not talk about politics there because the only thing I can think of to say is, “Isn’t it terrible when rich powerful men do such things to all of us.” thank you Nate

All of this is just pointing us to the end of things. Even if Trump, Starmer, Tusk, Van du Lyon, Macron and all of the others go away, someone else will maneuver the system to take their place. It's a perpetual cycle now. There are some saner heads out there, but they are in charge of things in the 'other' countries that the west doesn't like out of fear of competition.

And that is what this world has come down to. Competition for resources. As global warming does away with more and more agrarian lands in the tropic zones, the peoples will continue to migrate north to the northern hemisphere, causing that fear of not enough for those living there.

Humans are so very tribal even in this the 21st century.

The wars we are seeing now are only going to intensify as food and clean water become scarcer. It doesn't help much when we have idiots who can't see the forest for the trees in charge of nation states and coalition blocs. All they can see is the possible loss of personal power and revenue. Which makes them go against the people who elected them. Power is a heady thing, like an addiction. Once they get a good taste of it, they will do nearly anything to keep it.

Once they have it, nothing else matters and the people who elected them suffer the consequences. We are seeing this take place everywhere now as these leaders get more and more desperate to keep their tribal status.

If humans could finally learn to evolve past their primitive brains, the world could be a much better place to live in for all creatures.

The time change in North America, an interesting mathematical problem that I am writing a program for, and my insatiable need for another bike ride do impinge upon my timely reading of opinions that fortify my sense of what justice should be. Nate Bear, Ian Welsh, and Jessica Wildfire have been loosing broadsides on the malevolent beings delegated to ruin us on behalf of the billionaire overlords.

It is so very pleasurable to be thinking of the current shit show and the persons and events that are its genesis and then click on a ¡Do Not Panic! email and have my thoughts summarized clearly and concisely by someone (you, Nate) who has rhetorical skill.

If I may pile on ...

Our bettors task us to consume. The occasional thought is permissible so long as it is after, during, or best yet, leading to more purchases.

I'm old and in writing the following it is not lost upon me that this is the sort of lament that is typical of the aged: But goodness, the perversion of our language! Creative has lost any meaning. Creatives are found on short indulgent videos, trite posts on social media and of course, touting the must purchase item of the moment that fast fashion is foisting upon the impressionable.

It is with sadness that I number among the generation that removed the speed bumps on the super highway to doom, but may my enduring hope that those younger reinstall them come to fruition.

"every little heart I get on my articles is a shot of heat to my soul, reassurance that there remain people with a consistent moral through-line."

Yeah, and that works two ways. Thanks for writing. In my daily life, I know so few people who have any awareness of or concern about the ongoing SARS pandemic, nor the role that liberals have played in making the US what it is today. It's terribly isolating, but there are voices I find sane - unfortunately too thinly spread.

Still, your writing is appreciated.

My wife and I quote you all the time on your summary of the last election as being a choice between “Slow Fascism and Fast Fascism”. You along with others have really helped me see the problem of neoliberals, particularly regarding Climate Change, the Incarceration State, and Immigration. Keep it coming my friend. Each person that changes moves us closer to revolution.

Thank you Nate. I feel so powerless watching my teen, not knowing what is in store for them only that it will be way worse for their generation than anything I have experienced. I look forward to your next article and the next. You are one of very few giving voice to how terrible things are. Thank you.

"Things are bad, we need to do something, but loads of people don’t know it’s this bad, many don’t care, and the ones that do know don’t know what to do." That's it in a nutshell. I see it everywhere among my networks.

I'm also dismayed at the inability of many "liberals" and progressives to exercise any self-critical faculty. Movements that can't interrogate their own flaws don't learn anything new and become irrelevant. I suspect some people will chafe at your discussion of Obama's embrace of ICE, but blind enthusiasm for any leader is irresponsible and enables harm. The MAGA cult illustrates that perfectly. In my country (🇨🇦), people are embracing Mark Carney as the antidote to right wing toxicity and he's now predicted to win the next federal election. Considering the alternative, that isn't the worst outcome but I'm hoping that we don't forget to hold his feet to the fire.

Thanks for your good work Nate, and for continuing to bring the hard truths to our attention.

so rare to find the SCOPE covered here. Unfortunately, it's almost uniformly ominous, leading to one hell of an existential threat.

Well…those of us with sarscov2 disease around the world are well aware of our non-existence.

No treatments. No discussion. No acknowledgment.

My doctor doesn’t quite understand why I am pushing so hard for a different diagnosis. I told her I would rather have cancer than long covid. At least people believe that cancer is a disease, even if it was caused by covid, it would be better than long covid.

I have stopped talking about my disease. I have stopped answering any questions about increasing deaths and disease. No one wants to know. Cause no one wants to believe that something we can’t see can kill us or our children.

So, it’s a mystery why-

-There is an increase in maternal deaths

-there is an increase in tuberculosis

-there is an increase in lung cancer among young people

-there is an increase increase in sepsis

-there is an increase in many cancers

-there is an increase school absences and sick children

-there is an increase in rsv deaths

-an increase in suicides

-an increase domestic violence

-an increase in blood cancers

Etc,

Etc,

Etc
